The Experiences of Gay Couples Affected by HIV Infection
Gail M. Powell-Cope
College of Nursing, University of South Florida, Tampa
The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of gay couples when at least one was diagnosed with symptomatic HIV infection or AIDS. Grounded theory provided the methodological basis for the study. In-depth interviews were conducted with nine couples yielding approximately 50 hours of interview data. Being a couple affected by HIV Infection was perceived as a major life transition as both partners were confronted by multiple losses including possible death of the person with AIDS, dissolution of the relationship, health, independence, intimacy, and privacy. Processes of this transition included hitting home, mutual protection, and moving on.
